Training on civic participation in enforcing the right to equality and the equal treatment principle

A training course for humanities students on civic participation in enforcing the right to equality and the equal treatment principle was held 20 - 21 November 2009. The training course was organised by the Citizen and Democracy in the Comenius University Centre for Further Education in Modra-Harmonia.

The event focused on participation in civic activities, especially in the context of the right to equality and non-discrimination. A part of the training programme consisted of model situations and case-solving activities performed in groups or pairs. Participants tested their capabilities and skills, while receiving scholarly feedback from experts.

The training provided an overview of possibilities to influence public policy-making on the enforcement of the right to equality and non-discrimination in segregation cases (e.g., with respect to Roma communities, people with mental disabilities and migrants). It primarily focused on available legal and extra-legal mechanisms to influence such policies and their practical implications - e.g., participation in legislative procedures, initiatives and campaigns, negotiations with public administration bodies, etc. Attention was also given to the contribution of quality legal expertise and appropriately chosen communication and media strategies, for example in relation to allies, decision-makers and the public.
